Leopold's Maneuver

Class, we are diving into the stages of labor this week and I want to show you a video on how to perform an abdominal assessment of a pregnant women, including Leopold's Maneuver, fetal heart tone, and skin assessment. Leopold's Maneuver is a technique used to determine the position of the fetus as it lies in mom's abdomen.  This can tell a health care professional what the presenting part of the fetus is.  This is an excellent video to prepare you for your clinical and we will use a mannequin to simulate the assessment done on this video. I expect everyone to take notes from this video so everyone is well prepared when we perform our simulation.

FYI...

I just wanted to add a quick post about how to contact me.  I know my contact information can be located in the syllabus and on the course home page but I will also include it here in case you would need it.  Office hours are every Tuesday from 1pm-4pm. I can be contacted anytime of the day via my cell phone, 123-456-7890.  I welcome phone calls and/or text messaging. Last resort for me would be my email because it is the last thing I check.  However, if I have not responded to your phone call or text by the end of the day, make sure you send me an email.

Pregnancy IQ

Class! I hope you enjoyed the slide show presentation and really understood how the fetus grows each week.  The 3D ultrasound pictures were also very impressive and it was amazing the difference between the 2D and 3D.  I am going to post a link to the website where there is a pregnancy IQ quiz to take.  I found it on the Parents.com web site and thought it would be a fun way to see what you might know or not know about pregancy.  This is fun and learning at the same time.  I will be honest and tell you I did not get all ten questions right either.  If you feel comfortable, post comments on what your pregnancy IQ score was and any comments you have or had about the information presented in the quiz.  Enjoy!

Unit 1

Hopefully everyone was able to access the blog site and have been able to explore a little on the AWHOON home page.  In regards to the teen pregnancy article, it is great to see the rates dropping and if we keep educating and providing these young teens with available resources (i.e. birth control), we can hope to see the statistics continue to decline.

This week I am providing you with a link to mini presentation of how the fetus grows in the first thirteen weeks, or the first trimester.  What is really awesome about this, is the ultrasound pictures of the fetus and how you can see the weekly changes it makes.  The descriptions help you with what you are looking at so you can become a pro at interpreting ultrasounds! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Later this week I will be posting a pregnancy IQ test to see how much you know about pregnancy! Fun things to come!!!
